What Is Residential Care Home Living Like?

Residential Care Home Living: Your mom and dad want to downsize, and you’d like them to consider their need for care.

With residential care home living, everyone is happy. Your parents move into a private suite or apartment, but an active community surrounds them for socialization and assistance as needed.

A Spacious Suite or Apartment

Room sizes vary. There may be suites with a bedroom area, sitting area, private bathroom, and kitchenette. If they have a one- or two-bedroom apartment, there is a living room, bedrooms, a private bathroom, and a kitchenette. Ample storage and a locking entry door are standard in any residential care community.

Group Activities, Pets, and Fitness Classes

Your parents are welcome to stay in and spend the day alone. They’re also welcome to join others in the community in engaging activities and fitness classes.

The activities and classes vary from one day to the next. You might find that Sunday is a movie matinee afternoon where others can gather in the community for a movie. Yoga and Tai Chi classes are standard, but there are also Bingo games, paint and sips, and baking classes.

Community flower and vegetable gardens allow your parents the opportunity to go outside and enjoy gardening. There may be community pets, or your parents may be allowed to have their own pets. Even if they don’t, volunteers often bring pets to visit.

Restaurant Quality Meals

Daily menus vary, but they always have a selection of menu options that your parents order from a menu after sitting at the table. Typically, there are two or three options and an a la carte menu. Your parents don’t have to cook, and they each get what they want.

Your mom sits down and sees a roast turkey dinner with all the trimmings and wants that, but your dad doesn’t. That’s okay, as he can order the steak and baked potato meal instead. Or, he might want to order a grilled cheese sandwich with tomato soup from the a la carte options. It’s all possible, and dessert’s often available if they want it.

Transportation Is Available

Your mom and dad have appointments and don’t want to drive. That’s fine as residential care home living is available to drive them to and from area offices and businesses.

Transportation is also available for outings. Residents are welcome to sign up and go on outings as often as they’d like. Examples of excursions include shopping trips in the city, museum tours, a day at the beach, movie matinees, and afternoon sporting events. Inclement weather may postpone or cancel these trips.

Your parents enjoy it all in a residential care home. Friends and aides surround them, but they also have privacy. They enjoy regular restaurant-quality meals, and regular outings keep them engaged with the community. Call an expert in residential care home living to learn more.
